Thank you

"Tis done. I very fortunately had some St Remy VSOP Brandy left in the bottle from last year so the two loaves were soaked and wrapped. They actually were not all that bad but this extra coating will be just fine! I have a little piece of cake set aside for me to nibble on now as well but will wait for some of the Brandy to soak in.

Yesterday and this morning I cleared off the TV and set up the machines. I actually was able to watch a Christmas movie (VHS) last evening and will plan to be able to watch most of my box of special ones over course of next few weeks. The TV itself does not bring any channels in at all. I tried several antennas but nothing would bring in the one analog channel available in this area. or, maybe it is no longer available at all. That is not disastrous, but to be able to enjoy my movies has been on my mind for awhile. Small achievements haha!

I have to do some shoveling outside but keep putting it off - maybe I think it will actually melt! Not with these cold temperatures. It will still be there in a day or two so I can put it off as long  as i want - no one else will be doing it haha!

Better go for now -lots to do. Hope all is well there and you are keeping safe. Take care

Fruit Cake

I think I might sprinkle it with a fair bit of brandy and wrap it in Saran, for a few days.  Then make a decision whether to eat it as is or under custard. David says go for the custard right off.  After discussion he favours the brandy or to do both.

A question of a culinary nature

Please if you can help me.

I have leftover Christmas cake from last year ( thank goodness none was made for this year)

I would like to use it but not as is. It is a bit dry. I envision cake cut into pieces and done in a custard cream sauce of some sort.

What would you do???  Any ideas. This would be for my use only.

Thanks

A little bit of satisfaction

I may be aching and exhausted but I worked outside today and got all but a few of the tree branches trimmed. I now have one small pile of trees to trim and two massive piles of branches to burn. There’s also a couple of piles of branches that were too big for my clippers. Tomorrow Jim’s sister, Jean, has asked us to help her get a giant tarp over the top of her garage (it’s one of those easy set tarp garages). Hopefully I can get the last of the trees trimmed tomorrow too. As for today, I am very sore and ready for bed, and it is only 6:30. I have everything cleaned up from supper so there is nothing left to keep me out of bed except for the time. That is really kind of sad 😔. One week is the same as the last. No wonder people are getting so depressed during this lockdown. I saw Brian Pallister’s Christmas plea was featured on CNN. Manitoba is now famous, but there will be no Christmas. I got a FaceTime call from Kris and Chloe. Her first lost tooth is already growing in and she has 3 more loose!  Jim’s doctor gave him an application for disability, but only since 2019 since COPD is a progressive disease and although he was diagnosed around 2011, it has just gotten severe in the last year. He also has an application for a parking pass. I am starting to feel very old.

A bit of Chaos (long)

Up early again today, and musing about yesterday. Somewhat of a chaotic day around here.  I wanted to work in the studio.  I got down there about noon, and somewhat quickly accomplished what I intended, only to decide that one thing didn't work out the way I wanted.  I just as quickly lost any ambition to do anything else.  The rest of the day was spent watching tv, and working on my EPP.  Meanwhile, David was making what we hope is Multigrain Rye sourdough bread.  He started about 10:00 am, using a recipe that the two of us devised by combining aspects of three different sourdough bread recipes that we've used successfully for years.  Well things did not go well.  The bread didn't rise quickly.  David relies on the written recipes thoroughly, so if it says let rise for about 1 1/2 hours that's what he does. Didn't work out that way. Now, he tidies up as best he can, while he's working (Thank you Lord!), but still leaves the area ready for the next step.  He also frets over his work, like a true artist.  Meanwhile I'm just putting in time on Facebook.  So the bread is rising starting about 1:30.  This stretches to supper time.  No, not ready to cook yet.  Meanwhile we have turned the heat up in the house, and I'm melting, but still just putting in time.  We watch the news.  David watches something else, while I fool around on Facebook a bit more, and face the knowledge that I'm somewhat addicted to it.  Then I ask if I can watch the interview with the American President Elect and the Vice-President elect.  Bread is still sitting there, rising, and we debate whether we should just give up and throw it in the bin. The we watch the analysis of the interview.  Now it's 9:00 pm.  I have been in my housecoat ready for my bath for two hours.  (Didn't happen).  David decides that it makes no difference whether we throw it out cooked or raw, and puts it in the oven. It has been rising for 7 hours. Then we watch the rest of the analysis of the interview.  Now it's 10:00 pm.  David realizes that if he wants to make white bread, he needs to make the overnight starter portion of the recipe. and does that.  Bread comes out of the oven, and the loaves are very small, but look and sound like bread. It has been in progress for about 12 hours. The kitchen is a mess, and we go to bed.  Now I face a day that starts with a messy kitchen, and will progress to more bread making.   It's laundry day, something that we both dread, but recognize as essential. But we're not bored!

Heard from Amber that Jessica has been diagnosed with ADHD.  The school has now worked out a special learning process for her, however that might work with remote learning.  Jess's problems with school have been long standing and I applaud Amber and Darren for pursuing the reason and a solution.  Beth, I think you had some negative experiences with special learning needs and a non-responsive school, that had a real impact on your life for awhile.  I marvel at how attitudes and responses have changed so quickly over the years. I also remember Loren and his wife agonizing over Jeremy's needs in school and the effort it took them to to make sure that the school followed the plans that were developed.  Not an easy road.  Yesterday David and I discussed how such things were never identified or accommodated when we were young, or even when my children were young. In  some of the reading I've done, I've heard the term "lost boys" used to describe the fate of boys (and it was usually boys) with such issues in school.  They were just left behind and usually quit school in grade 8 or 9. Today one can no longer make a living, or even find a job, without, at least, finishing high school.  I guess it has even affected my children, when we were forced to send Loren to St. John's, in response to a very non-responsive school.  In many ways that had a significant impact on our lives both socially and financially, especially after we took Amber from one  one school district to another , and had to pay non-resident fees.  It's not easy raising children-period.

Other than David's breadmaking and the laundry, I have little planned for today.  I know that I have to  solve the problem that came up in my studio work yesterday, and laundry day is often spent in the basement.  Since I'm following my diet book precisely, I already know what I'll be having for supper, and don't have to worry about that, but we'll have to find something for David--something that he can have with fresh white sourdough bread.  He has a freezer full of options.  I'll be thinking some more about families and children and grand children, still musing about how the future will turn out.  Have a good day ladies, and be safe.

It is mild..

Right now it is 32 F and melting a bit but there is still snow and now it will be heavy with moisture to move. I want to clear the roof a bit to prevent freezing and ice buildup. Welcome to Winter i guess as now I can start to worry about different things haha!

I said in the last posting that I wanted to eat better but I should say I have not followed my plan already. Yesterday i pulled out some liver from the freezer. I love liver and i can cook it just for myself the way I like it. And I like it with bacon, and onions and the liver coated with flour and sizzled in butter until moist and tender. Perhaps not a good way to eat better but it sure satisfied my soul.

Last evening I scrolled through the Prime Video to see what Christmas Movies might be offered - none I really wanted to see until I came upon two with the world famous musician (he plays violin and has his own performing orchestra) Andre Rieu. I have three of his videos of my own but these were Christmas ones so I sat for about two hours on my own and thoroughly enjoyed one of the videos - filmed at his own home (a 1500 's castle like mansion) It moved me so much and lifted my spirits greatly. So it was a nice choice. Perhaps i shall be able to view the other one over the weekend.

So have a nice weekend all and heed your Health Care requests ( I should say their pleas) to stay home. It is unnerving to listen to the news anymore.

Too much snow...

There is simply too much snow for a little girl like me but...I shall prevail and get out there and shovel up!! But first my coffee and a wee message. It blew about all evening - I prepared myself with a whisk broom at the inside of the front door because it always drifts in there and sure enough it was useful to get out early with Bailey. Bailey always gets up with me, but the little girl Lily always sleeps in which makes it better for me to take them out one at a time anyway. With cold and snow i now have to 'bundle" them up. Funny how everything I seem to be doing now in my life brings backs memories of what i had to do when the kids were young. For example "bundling" up the dogs it takes ages and they squirm about etc. And also watching all the new cats and making sure they do not kill all my birds is like running after the two year old kid and keeping them out of trouble. Deja vue??? Frankly I could use a break once in awhile haha!

I baked a pizza for myself yesterday - call it soul food or whatever, but in times of need..bake a pizza! So I have leftovers for my breakfast and maybe even lunch. I have been trying to watch what i eat as i was getting a little out of control with the snacking and not eating wisely. So this last shopping on Monday i bought 'good" food for myself. Back to the spinach and eggs. and the cottage cheese on toast with almonds and cinnamon etc. I still eat a lot of fruit fresh or fruit  in smoothies but I also like bread and always will eat the goodies that Harry so kindly brings home for me. I need to eat better!

So I shall now get myself in gear and get out there and do my thing. I like to get it done (or at least started) early. The plough should be down soon and then I can tackle the end of the driveway - it will be a really big pile this morning.

Take care all...hope you are all staying safe and healthy.
